    Description

Africa African DRC Democratic Republic of Congo Salampasu Initiation Rights Mask ca. 20th century. The mask is very expressive and visibly old and measures 13 X 6 1/2 X 7 1/2 inches with expected age wear as seen in the images. The face is covered with copper plates The aggressive aspect of the Salampasu masks with their large rounded forehead and visible teeth, readily leads us to think that they could easily inspire fear and respect. "It has often been said that the Salampasu were head cutters, a reputation perhaps more in relation to the appearance of their masks than from the reality " (Detour des Mondes) The Salampasu live on the border Congo Drc / Angola and are neighbors of the Tshokwe. Measures overall with base 21 inches high.
