African Mask Liberia Dan Tribe Wooden Mask with decorations

Dan mask collected in Liberia in 1990.
When instructed by a “DU” [a woodland/jungle spirit - guiding and sustaining the Dan], a Dan tribe member would commission a carver to make a mask to wear in a sacred dance. These masks depict varying designs related to the “DU’s” form itself.
This one has slit eye & mouth openings.  A stuffed cloth studded with cowrie shells
surrounds the face at the hair line.  Several of the shells are missing.  A double row of shells attached with mastic encircle the face from side of mouth to opposite side of mouth.  The mask bears a course fabric [jute-like] beard loose at left side top.  Mask overall displays wear to high points' finish.  Holes drilled around the reverse border provide for attachment of a headdress when used in ceremonial performances.

1/2 Inches Deep.  No apparent insect damage---This piece was frozen for 24 hours in 1990 thus killing any potential insect eggs.
