Description

This is a wonderful Old Dogon Rabbit( Dyommo) Mask from Mali. The color and texture of the hood added the mask give it animation and spirit. The classical Dogon face is here topped by a large pair of rabbit ears which also serve as the ears of a much smaller and more naturalistic rabbit face emerging over the forehead of the first. The carefully applied paint acts almost like camouflage, disguising the shift from plane to plane, and creating a unified, vibrating surface. This is can be a final commemorative ceremony for an important Dogon elder. The masked dancers perform, creating a brilliantly colored spectacle of sculpture, costume, song, and dance. Mimicking the gait of a rabbit, the dancer hops around. Dogon animal masks are regarded as "beings of the bush", representing the world beyond the village perimeter. They symbolize everything that is wild, and beyond the control of man. This rabbit mask which performs with the hunter (Dannana mask) hunter. The hunter pretends to hunt the rabbit masks performing with him. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called "Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. This would be fabulous addition to your collection or home.
