OLD ETHNIC TRADE BEADS of AMBER COLOR
28 inch long string of 155 Beads
Beautiful depth of color and patina in these vintage beads!
The beads in this strand are irregular in shape and size, measuring about ¼ inch to 3/8 inch long. The shades of amber color vary from honey to reddish to brown. They appear to be handmade, with some pitting and surface/edge blemishes that do not, in my opinion, detract at all from their appeal.
I measured the string to be about 28 inches long, and I counted 155 beads.
These vintage beads were a gift years ago from a relative who traveled and worked throughout
Africa
and other places in the world. (If memory serves me, these were purchased in
Morocco
.)
Wanting to discover if these were truly amber, I searched online for ways to test that. I succeeded in poking myself with a red hot needle, setting off the smoke alarm, wasting several cups of salt in water, but reaching no conclusion except that I think they are beautiful, handmade, and I like them regardless of what material was used. In doing some research, I learned that many raw amber-looking trade beads are actually resin copal "amber".
