Item Description: this is a wonderful Rare Early Nigerian Ogoni Karikpo antelope mask 22'' from prominent estate. In ownership of a retired archaeologist who studied African cultures in the 1950s and 60s. A similar yet smaller mask was recently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other works in his collection will be auctioned of in our African Mask auction. Please contact us if you have any questions.

The Ogoni are a distinctive people, numbering around 850,000, in the
Niger Delta region of the modern-day nation-state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They have a distinct culture, language, and history, and have traditional religious and political systems that differ even from their closest neighbors.
