SONGYE Kifwebe African Tribal mask with a masculine central crest, all over incisions, globular hooded pierced eyes, and protruding mouth. “Kifwebe” means “mask that chases away.” It is a type of striated face mask used in context of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. The dancers display different demeanors, aggressive for the male and controlled for the female. Raffia headpiece is intact, which is rare.
I purchased this in 2009. It was described to me as “OLD TRIBALLY USED SONGYE KIFWEBE FROM CONGO/ZAIRE,” but no addition documentation was provided.
30” tall 14” wide, 13” deep (about 8 pounds).
All my auctions are starting at .99 and no reserve. I have spent a great deal of money on my collection over the years, will see if I break even.
