Description
For your consideration is a C.G Conn 28A Connstellation long cornet with Conn case and swab rod included. While it has a wrap system that gives it the appearance of a trumpet, this horn takes a cornet mouthpiece. This model (SN 551847) is a 1955 early version of the 28A made in Elkhart, IN as confirmed by the information provided by conn-selmer's website as well as The Conn Loyalist site. The peculiar thing about this horn is that the lead pipe has the word "Connstellation" engraved but does not have the common "A" engraving marked anywhere on it. Several websites indicated that there were two versions produced and both had a letter A engraved on it.
While we can only speculate, we believe this could be an oversight during production, an early version of the horn before they settled on a particular system, or a replacement mouthpiece receiver with the Connstellation engraving on the leadpipe minus the A on the receiver section. Without any others to reference, we cannot confirm.
Considered the "secret weapon", this instrument is often preferred over the 38B Connstellation trumpet and has a varied sound between bright trumpet and mellow cornet. Significant tone changes happen when swapping between even just mouthpieces giving the player a variety of applications available to them in just one horn.
This instrument is in need of a regulation and adjustment along with a repair to the main tuning slide due to a lost water key nipple. It also has quite a bit of plate wear to the ends of the slides and the valve casings. However, the bell and lead pipe sections have almost no wear present. All the valves and slides move with ease and with a few corrections, this instrument could be a wonderful horn for someone once again!
The case is slightly worn on the exterior and the latches are not functioning as efficiently as it once did, but the case is structurally in tact with an internal pocket that can still be used and mouthpiece slots also available. The lining of the felt on the edges is pulling away and has areas that are worn but again is still functional to protect and transport the instrument. A vintage swab is present inside the case that will be included with the purchase of the horn. No mouthpiece is included with this offering.
As with all used instruments, we recommend speaking with your local repair technician before placing an order or making an offer. Repair rates and parts vary from shop to shop.
Take advantage in owning a great piece of Conn history with a unique piece in their lineup!
Thanks for your consideration!
